So, I ended up making a can (form1) and did a few test cycles today with cci suppressor rated ammo (950fps I think?). Anyway, definitely quieter with the can on vs not but… I dunno,e expected way more. 5.5" barrel into 7" can (35mm OD). You could shoot this all day of course with no ears on, but it’s just not doing it for me.
What is currently the quietest can sailing currently? I original was going to try something from the FTN line but ended up going down this rabbit hole of making my own LOL. I mean, it did work so I’m not going to be super hard on myself…just didn’t work well enough for what I’m looking for.
Barrel length also plays a large role in how quiet a gun can be. My baby barret, m4gery, and sr722 all have barrels longer than 21" and are very tolerable with standard velocity ammo without using a can.
On the other hand, my 22lr builds with 1.5-4" barrels are some of the loudest pistols I’ve fired.
CCI quiet “semi auto” ammo helps a ton too, even with the shorter barrels. Aguilla sniper subsonic is really nice just harder to find and some guns don’t cycle it well.
Yeah I’m going to slap the can on my Anschutz 22 and see how it compares to this short barrel. This ammo should have been fairly quiet just by virtue of it being a subsonic round but we’ll play around a bit. I think I have some std CCI around here somewhere I can compare with just for giggles.

Baby barret is one of my favorite builds I’ve done. I recommend opting for a full size barrel. It’s also one of my most accurate full DIY builds.
CCI standard velocity is subsonic as well.
People often have unrealistic expectations for 22LR “suppressor” ammo. It generally has just as much power as conventional ammo (hence just as much “report”) but uses a heavier bullet to ensure it remains subsonic. Since most 22LR ammo is already subsonic out of a < 6" barrel, the suppressor ammo buys you nothing in terms of sound reduction.
Note that suppressor ammo sometimes runs a little cleaner and may be overall higher quality/more consistent than bulk ammo, so it’s not necessarily a bad choice … just don’t expect it to automatically be more quiet.
No experience with .22lr cans, but for my 9mm, the quietest reading I’ve gotten is with the hubtn.4, he has a .22lr version, but again I have not tested it, might be worth to try it out though

How much of the noise is from port pop and muzzle blast versus the action sounds? The bolt slamming home on my 10/22 is obnoxiously loud and I wear earplugs even while shooting that suppressed. I tend to prefer shooting repeater and single shot firearms suppressed. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll suppress every firearm I can, but repeaters are a lot quieter than self loaders.
I wonder how much you can mitigate that with a printed receiver and a Proto Barrel. More plastic, less metal, quieter action?
Yeah, I’m sure if the receiver was printed it would cut the noise down quite a lot.
Ftn is going to be the most effective long term solution. Plaboi was an absolute genius with his designs. Especially if you print with reinforced nylon and use cf or aluminum tubing for reinforcement

Cci quiets will do the trick. Were you running subsonic 22lr? 950 is awful fast for a subsonic 22lr.
